  • 'Since the incident on the 9th April 2011, I have received six EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy sessions. Also in the sessions I have used a relaxing 'safe place' imagery which eliminates anxiety and which can make you feel calm. Using the therapy has helped me to be more confident, calm and made me able to approach matters differently. As a result of the therapy it has enabled me to manage my personal life with more confidence. The role of the therapist has been excellent using all of his skills to enable me to get on with my life and put the past behind me.

Following an armed robbery Mark developed PTSD. He then received 6 sessions of EMDR.

  • 'The therapy first addressed my problems of low mood. This gave me the belief that I could again socialise and meet up with friends again. By gradually increasing my confidence, I was able to then once again step out of the door, visit the shops and then return to work. As a result of CBT I now have my life back and I now no longer fear to go anywhere. It also gave me the opportunity to re-examine some unhealthy beliefs about myself.'

Susan received 12 sessions of CBT for agorophobia and depression.

  • ‘I have recently finished completing a course of Cognitive Therapy. The course was offered to me following a car accident. I felt very much involved in my therapy and it really was all about me. At each session I was given material relevant to my problems to read and with help and guidance of Charlie, able to make action plans and establish goals. There is a lot of ‘homework’ and you must be prepared to take it on board. Every few weeks at an appropriate time Charlie would evaluate my progress using questionnaires and score charts (I hate score charts). It was good to see mostly progress and that encouraged me to carry on. CBT is not an easy therapy. You have to want to help yourself and fully participate in every session. It can be very painful and upsetting at times re-living the accident – the ifs, buts and what ifs.1/2

  • I will miss the one to one sessions with Charlie, but with the knowledge, understanding and self-help tools I came away with I feel more confident to carry on making progress. Therapy doesn’t have to end at the completion of the course. I will now regularly set aside ‘time for me’. It is reassuring to know that if I do need help I can get in touch with Charlie for advice, visit a web-site or get in touch with another agency. All of this information was given to me on completion of the course. I am so pleased I decided to have the course of CBT. I have benefitted from it and Charlie I think the ‘SAFE PLACE’ is amazing. Thank you so much for your help, guidance and support throughout the course.’ 2/2

  • 'One morning while doing my job, I had just asked one driver to please leave the yellow zig-zag lines, when a second driver dropped off his children from his van. The van driver then drove around the corner onto the yellow zig-zag lines and pinned me between his van and the safety railings outside the school gates. It turned out that the van driver was over twice the legal limit, at the time he blew his lowest reading in the police station later that morning. The police told me later that he would probably have been closer to 4 times the limit when he was outside the school. The serious nature of what happened to me took some time to fully take hold over me. It was about a month after the incident that I was finally unable to continue to function in a normal day to day manner. I was suffering from nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, bed-wetting and depression. I couldn't take it any more. My relationship was suffering, I couldn't do my job properly as I was too scared to be outside because if a van or other large vehicle came close it would trigger a panic attack. I decided to go to my doctor as I couldn't keep going, living day to day on a diet of coffee, energy drinks and sugar rich foods to keep me awake. My doctor diagnosed post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. He recommended I get counselling.1/4

  • After organising the counselling sessions, I was still pretty sceptical about all this tree hugging hippy stuff. I still thought that therapy is what the stupid yanks do. Talking to some quack about your mum and dad and how they didn't love you enough, like you see on the telly. But at this stage I was ready to try anything to get my life back. On the first day of the therapy Charlie asked me what I wanted. I told him I wanted my life back and that I would stand on my head for 20 minutes everyday if he told me it would work. He explained the ideas behind CBT and EMDR in a simple, straight forward way that made sense.' Charlie took my explanation of not having the right tools to fix myself and used that analogy from then on to reinforce in me that CBT and EMDR are simply put methods for you to fix yourself. The therapist is there to guide you and to push you sometimes, but you have to do the work yourself.' 2/4

  • 'The therapy is tough it will force you to look at your trauma and to recognise that what you are experiencing is normal, that you are not weak or cowardly. You need to accept that you are experiencing a normal reaction to an abnormal event. Once you come to terms with that, then you can move forward. Baby steps at first sometimes falling flat on your face too. The trick is to keep getting back on your feet. Charlie is there to help you keep getting back up and he does it time after time without fail, it's what he does. At the end of my therapy I had come to believe in the therapy and my therapist to such a degree, that I knew I could not fail to recover, that I would overcome the trauma and not let the drunk driver who had caused the whole nightmare in the first place to ruin the rest of my life. I would whole-heartedly recommend using Charlie Parker and Quayside CBT Ltd. to anyone who asked me. Charlie is quite simply an amazing guy. He gave me back my life, where once all I had was panic and fear I now have peace and happiness. I owe Charlie a debt that cannot be repaid, I am myself again, I have beaten the trauma and won the satisfaction of knowing anything is possible for me from now on.’ 4/4

  • 'So far so good. I am having some frustrating moments but I do understand that it will take some practice to change my frame of mind. It's one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. A true test of character. I love the worksheets, especially the feedback. Charlie is great and always quick to respond and is patient. I really look forward to filling out the worksheets every week and trying new ways to combat my anxiety and negative thinking. It's incredibly useful to have my own therapist online because it's a source of comfort. I am about halfway through the 8 sessions and I really like them so far. It's like tackling a new problem every week. It's a very slow process, but I am trying.'
