What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a system of psychotherapy based upon a body of experimental and clinical studies and well defined therapeutic techniques. CBT is a short-term therapy, normally between 3 and 15 sessions. It is a structured form of psychotherapy designed to alleviate symptoms and to help people learn more effective ways of dealing with difficulties contributing to their suffering. The therapeutic thrust of cognitive therapy is problem-orientated. Unlike other talking treatments, CBT focuses on the problems and difficulties you have now, rather than issues from your past. It looks for practical ways you can improve your state of mind on a daily basis.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is an evidenced based psychological therapy and is recommended by the Department of Health and the National Institute for Clinical Excellance (NICE) http://guidance.nice.org.uk/topic/behavioural for a range of mental health problems. This evidence has been generated through years of psychological research, clinical trials, case studies and professional guidelines. The therapy is collaborative and aims to help the client's understanding of how their problems developed, what maintains them and what needs to happen to address these difficulties.

Within CBT a formulation is developed that helps the client to understand how past events and experiences have led to the client developing core beliefs, conditional assumptions, emotions and behaviours. Such experiences impact upon everyday lives and relationships. For each mental health need, a psychological model has been developed and is used to help explore current difficulties. CBT therefore, follows a structure of interventions, which aim to reduce the level of distress through a problem solving approach.

Through a process of collaboration, reflection and experimentation a client is able to develop the skills, that enable them to make the changes necessary for progress to be made. Such skills also help reduce the possibility of relapse following completion of therapy.

What is Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)?

Mindfulness-based cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is specialist area of psychological therapy which bases its foundation on traditional CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) methods with mindfulness techniques and the multi disciplines of Buddhism. The individual can be mentored in the managements of accepting thoughts and feelings without delivering judgement or boxing negative memories of experiences to the back of the mind. The core intentions of MBCT is not necessarily to generate relaxation and happiness but rather to alongside develop a “freedom from the tendency to let ones self be drawn into automatic reactions to thoughts, feelings, and events beyond ones control” which may become negative, stressful or troublesome to recall

The benefits are now proven within PET scans which are pictures of the brain when engaging in the Mindfulness approach. The images have shown significant reduction in the distress levels within certain areas of the brain that processes emotions. MBCT has been recommended as a treatment for depression in the NICE guidelines (UK Institute of Clinical Excellence).

The main benefit of using MBCT techniques is the ability to prioritise learning the self discipline of how to pay attention and concentrate with purpose in mind, in moments which may cause concern without judgment or stress. With our Mindfulness based programs our clients can learn to recognise that holding onto some of these feelings can be ineffective and mentally destructive to one wellbeing. MBCT notices detail and teaches people how to recognise the warning signs of depression, anxiety, stress. People learn to identify, accept and notice their negative automatic thoughts, emotions and sensations. Mindfulness is the ability to sit back and observe our thoughts without judgement, this leading to stress reduction, effective use of anxiety, aid in pain management and overcome depression.

If you would like more information on our Mindfulness based therapy sessions please contact us and find out about how this approach can be a preventative measure rather than a reactive measure to take.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) involves recalling a stressful past event and "reprogramming" the memory in the light of a positive, self-chosen belief, while using rapid eye movements to facilitate the process. Theories as to why EMDR works are still evolving, but many people have found EMDR to be extremely beneficial. Read on to learn about this complex and often misunderstood therapy. Charlie Parker is a member of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) incorporates elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy with bilateral eye movements or other forms of rhythmic, left-right stimulation. One of the key elements of EMDR is "dual stimulation." During treatment, you are asked to think or talk about memories, triggers, and painful emotions while simultaneously focusing on your therapist’s moving finger or another form of bilateral stimuli. In a typical EMDR Therapy session, you focus on traumatic memories and associated negative emotions and beliefs while tracking your therapist’s moving finger with your eyes as it moves back and forth across your field of vision. Other forms of external stimuli that may be used in EMDR therapy include bilateral tactile sensations and sounds (e.g. alternating hand taps or a chime that pans back and forth from ear to ear). Charlie has completed Stage one of EMDR training therefore EMDR can be offered within Quayside CBT Clinics for specific clients, following a comprehensive assessment.
